Judith Peterson

Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Peterson is a physician and visual artist based in Sioux Falls, S.D. Her photography has appeared in South Dakota Magazine, the Argus Leader, and numerous other publications. South Dakota Public Broadcasting featured her photography weekly on its website for the public health education television show “On Call.”   Her photographic work on issues of health and illness was featured in Harvard Magazine. A selection of her photographs from this series was published in the award winning book, The Picture of Health -- A View from the Prairie with essays by Dr. Rick Holm, and was featured at the South Dakota Festival of Books in 2009. 

She has had numerous solo shows of her photographic work. One of her photographic exhibits, Flat Track Mamas and Roller Babes, photography of the Sioux Falls Roller Dollz women’s roller derby team, explored the world of contemporary roller derby, one of the few contact women’s sports and one of the very few sports largely organized and controlled by women.

She is also a practicing physician, Board Certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and in Sports Medicine. She has broad experience in arts and dance medicine.  Dr. Peterson is a consultant to the Pennsylvania Ballet. Her book, Dance Medicine Head to Toe-A Dancer’s Guide to Health was published by Princeton Book Publishers in 2011.
