Sara L. Terheggen, PhD, is a corporate partner at Morrison & Foerster. Dr. Terheggen has advised on numerous corporate and private equity fund transactions with an aggregate value in excess of $90 billion. Her capital markets expertise includes extensive experience leading transactions for both companies and underwriters in connection with public and private offerings of equity and debt securities. Dr. Terheggen's private equity experience focuses on advising sponsors in the structuring, formation, and offering of private investment funds.
Prior to joining Morrison & Foerster, Dr. Terheggen worked for Simpson Thacher and Skadden, Arps. In addition to her legal career, she has over 10 years of experience in the development, management and assessment of initiatives in STEM. Previously, she was director of assessment for University of California Merced School of Engineering and was the founding education director for the National Science Foundation Center for Embedded Networked Sensing at UCLA. She also spent several years consulting for the National Science Foundation Center of Integrated Nanomechanical Systems at Univerisity of California in Berkeley.
Dr. Terheggen was selected by the University of Oregon to receive the 2015 Outstanding Young Alumni Award, which recognizes a graduate under age 46 for outstanding professional success and community involvement. She also has been recognized by numerous publications as one of California's rising legal stars.The Silicon Valley Business Journal named her one of the region's "40 under 40" business leaders and as one of Silicon Valley's "Women of Influence." She has been recognized by The Recorder as a "Woman Leader in Tech Law," a "Lawyer on the Fast Track" (one of 50 California attorneys whose early accomplishments indicate they will be tomorrow's leaders) and as one of its "Top 40 Women Leaders in Law." Public Counsel, the largest pro bono law office in the nation, recognized her with a Pro Bono Achievement award for her efforts in helping establish their first-ever Small Business Clinic. Dr. Terheggen was invited to the White House on two occasions, to participate in forums on women in the financial sector and a Business Council leadership discussion.
Dr. Terheggen sits on several boards, including the Boalt Hall Alumni Association Board, the Global Advisory Council for 100 Women in Hedge Funds, and the Board of Trustees for Rising International. She also serves as a California delegate to the Vision 2020 Project, a national campaign to advance American women's economic and social equality. In connection with this initiative, Dr. Terheggen has developed a Think Tank series that focuses on increasing the number of women in senior leadership positions. The series is co-sponsored by the Stanford Rock Center and the Stanford Women on Boards Initiative. She has also been involved in several golf tournaments to raise money for the American Cancer Society and, most recently, served as a founding tournament director for the Golf Classic benefiting Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford.
