The Major
The new Department of Biodiversity, Earth, and Environmental Sciences (BEES) is offered by faculty from both the College of Arts and Sciences and the Academy of Natural Sciences. BEES confers BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Environmental Science through an interdisciplinary curriculum that integrates theory and practice, combining traditional coursework with field experiences that begin even before the first class term. The department offers four concentrations:
- Environmental Science
- Earth Sciences
- Ecology and Conservation
- Biodiversity and Evolution
Fieldwork
Fieldwork begins with a week-long pre-term session for all BEES students at the Barnegat Bay Field Station in New Jersey. Barnegat Bay offers research opportunities in:
- Turtle ecology
- Wetland processes and climate change
- Fisheries biology
- Nutrient dynamics
BEES students will have access to other field stations including:
- The Laboratory of Pinelands Research in New Jersey
- Bioko Island in Equatorial Guinea, Africa
- Lake Hovsgol in Mongolia
