Act 101 Services
Act 101 services evolve with the needs of our participants. Currently, the program offers transition programming, academic and financial counseling, mentoring, tutoring, developmental activities, and a lending library.
Transition programming takes many forms. New, incoming freshmen are invited to participate in a four-week, summer academic bridge program. Students who are unable to attend the summer bridge program are able to enroll in a one-credit seminar in the fall that focuses on promoting academic self-management. Beyond the transition, students continue to have access to an academic counselor and mentor who can help them build the skills necessary to be competitive and to succeed at Drexel.
Act 101 caseload is managed by a professional academic coach. Email and phone outreach is coordinated around the release of academic standing (break week) and the launch of early warning (week 6). Students on academic dismissal are guided and supported through the academic appeals process. Students are asked to meet formally with a member of the staff at least once during each quarter they are in classes (not on co-op). It is highly recommended that new students, students on or near academic probation, students in danger of losing their scholarship, and students with disabilities meet with a member of the staff on a more regular schedule. Intrusive approaches are used based on student need and interest.
Our Director of Compliance embedded within the Financial Aid Office provides initial assessment of program eligibility with regard to income and residency guidelines. The Director of Compliance meets with all new Act 101 students to review their financial aid package, ensure compliance with loan and other FA requirements, and address issues of affordability. Continued support is available for students in completing the FAFSA and in navigating complex financing issues. In addition, the Director of Compliance audits for financial holds, progress towards degree, and graduating seniors with outstanding balances.
Our mentors are trained upperclassmen who are available to assist students with their transition to Drexel in their first year. Mentors will be able to introduce freshmen to life at Drexel and in Philadelphia.
Tutoring is available to students on request. Our staff works to connect students with department-based supports wherever possible. Coordinated drop-in tutoring is available through the respective academic departments for math, biology, chemistry, engineering, physics, computer science, statistics, and accounting. Appointment-based tutoring is available for nursing and other health sciences through the Center for Academic Success. Appointment-based support for writing-intensive courses is available through the Drexel Writing Center (for all students) and the English Language Center (for ESL students). Some of our students require more individualized attention, a service most departments were ill equipped to provide. In these instances, our staff worked to identify an upper-division tutor with Federal Work-Study eligibility who could work one-on-one with the student.
Developmental workshops and seminars are informed by the staff, advisory board, and our active caseload of students. The focus is on promoting students’ personal, social, intellectual, and professional growth. At an institution such as Drexel, connection to the profession is an especially important institutional value. The program regularly sponsors a fall and spring welcome back event that provides an opportunity for returning Act 101 students to reconnect with program staff and each other. The program also sponsors a quarterly Study Jam during finals week.
Through our lending libraries, students can borrow textbooks for an extended period of time without a fee.
