Program Extension

F-1 and J-1 students may need to extend the program end date on their I-20 or DS-2019 for academic or medical reasons. In these cases, ISSS can extend a student’s program of study prior to their program end date.

Program Extension Eligibility

Students whose program of study will continue beyond the program end date listed on their I-20/DS2019 must apply and receive approval of a program extension before the current program end date. Students are eligible for an extension if they apply before the program end date, have made satisfactory progress toward their degree, and have compelling academic and/or medical reasons.

Students who fail to apply for a program extension prior to the program end date on their current I20/DS-2019 are considered out of status and no longer eligible for F-1/J-1 visa benefits.

How to Apply for a Program Extension

F-1 and J-1 students should complete and return the Program Extension form (found on ISSS forms) to ISSS 30 days before the program completion date listed on the current DS-2019.

If there is a change in funding source, provide financial documentation covering expenses for the extension period.

Program extension requests take up to four (4) to five (5) business days to be processed.
