How is the selection process conducted?

Applicants will be evaluated throughout the following steps: application questions, group interview activities, and an individual interview with the Director of New Student and Family Programs. All applicants will proceed through the application process and group interview. Only applicant finalists will participate in the Director of New Student and Family Programs.

When are applications due?

The Orientation Leader online application will close on Friday, March 2, 2012 at 5:00 PM. 

Where should I bring my recommendation forms?

One letter of recommendation will be accepted at the group interview. The Letter of Recommendation should be written by a supervisor, professor, advisor, or other professional staff member who can write about your strengths and abilities as they relate to the Orientation Leader position. Letters of Recommendation will not be accepted if they are written by current students, friends, or family members. Please submit this letter in a sealed envelope with the signature of the reference on the seal.  

What is a complete application?

A complete application contains all information you are asked to complete on the online application. The application cannot be submitted unless you fill-in all required information.

What is Orientation or NSO?

 New Student Orientation (NSO) at Drexel University is an opportunity for new students and families to become connected to the Drexel community. Orientation Leaders (OLs) serve as a crucial component of the NSO program and are charged with assisting new students and families with their academic, social, and cultural transition to the Drexel University community. In collaboration with other NSO staff members, OLs assist in assimilating new students and families in areas such as academic study, social support skills, and awareness of campus policies, activities, and services.

How are the OL’s compensated?

Orientation Leaders will beprovided on-campus housing during Orientation Leader Training and SummerOrientation Sessions. One double occupancy room in an on-campus residence hallis provided between Sunday, June 17 and Saturday, August 11, 2012. Meals areprovided during New Student Orientation sessions only. The position paysapproximately $1,500.00 (pre-tax) total upon the completion of the followingschedule:

·       June 2012: $500.00 (pre-tax)

·       July 2012: $500.00 (pre-tax)

·       September 2012: $250.00 (pre-tax) - Contingent on working Fall Orientation and New Student Days

·       November 2012: $250.00 (pre-tax) - Contingent on workingFamily Weekend

What type of training will be provided?

Orientation Leader training occurs during Term Break and weeks 1 and 2 of the summer term.

OLs participating in co-op interviews during training must communicate all conflicts with the training schedule to their supervisor as soon as possible. The following list includes some of the topics that are covered during training:

  • New Student Orientation program information

  • Drexel’s campus and resources information

  • Communication skills

  • Leadership skills

  • Working effectively with parents, peers, staff and faculty

  • Giving campus tours

Can I be an OL if I am on Co-op or taking classes?

The Orientation Leader position requires full time availability throughout the summer term. In most cases, students enrolled in classes or co-op are not able to fulfill the responsibilities of the position. For this reason, most upper class students are not able to be Orientation Leaders. There are some special circumstances that allow upper class students to be hired, please attend an information session to determine if you are eligible.  

What else should applicants know about the job?

Orientation Leaders represent not only themselves, but also the entire Orientation Leader team, the New Student and Family Programs office, and Drexel University as a whole. As a result, those hired to the position will be held to a high standard in respect to their conduct on and off the job. The Orientation Leader position is also a perfect opportunity for students to develop leadership skills in order to become a student leader in the future.
