On-campus Employment

  • Under the regulations, on-campus employment can usually occur immediately when a student arrives (or has had his/her SEVIS record transferred in and activated) or throughout his/her time as an F-1/J-1 student.
  • An F-1/J-1 student can work only 20 hours per week while class is in session. F-1/J-1 students are allowed to work more hours during established breaks.
  • F-1/J-1 students can work on-campus during their program of study as long as they do not exceed the maximum number of work hours (20 hours per week while school is in session) and they adhere to guidelines about their employer.
  • F-/J-1 students cannot do co-op and on campus employment at the same time.
  • J-1 students must have authorization on their Ds-2019 for on-campus employment
  • F-1 students do not need to inform ISSS of their on campus employment.

The regulations state that F-1/J-1 students may be employed at one of the following:

  • On the premises of the institution, employed by the institution
  • On the premises of the institution, employed by a commercial firm which provides services for students on campus (note: “provides services for students on campus” remains open to interpretation)
