Amount of Award: $93,000

Teacher education faculty from four diverse institutions (Utah State, West Virginia University, Mills College, and St. Petersburg College) will collaborate with the Math Forum to study the development of mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT) in elementary pre-service teachers (PTs) who participate in online mathematics mentoring experiences, as well as their retention and application of this knowledge in their student teaching experiences in the field.

The project addresses the critical issue of the quality of STEM teacher preparation as well as the critiques that pre-service programs are neither grounded in sufficient field experiences nor focused on the core competencies that will define teacher success in the classroom.  The innovative, integrated design of this project will improve teaching of pre- service teachers and their instructors, while furthering our understanding of the development of PTs’ MKT.
