Urban Education Lecture Series: Statement of Purpose
The Urban Education Lecture Series will serve as a vehicle for critical dialog and professional development related to education in an urban context to connect with the academic and broader community which includes students, families, policy makers, business stakeholders, and community leaders.
The Series will provide the opportunity for Drexel’s School of Education to expand its leading role/visibility related to civic engagement and collaborations within K-12 Philadelphia. The Series will also provide SoE faculty an enhanced understanding of critical factors in preparing urban educators which may ultimately impact our academic programs.
Drexel University’s School of Education Vision
The SoE will be nationally and internationally recognized for best practices in development of professionals in education and related fields; formal research and scholarship; and education access for traditional and non-traditional students.
The School of Education develops leaders with the expertise to collaborate and solve complex problems related to transforming institutions and educating diverse populations impacted by domestic and global challenges.
Goal 1: To support our students, staff, faculty, and alumni in developing transformative and innovative approaches to solving complex problems in their respective fields.
1.1 Increase support for the annual productivity of faculty engaged in scholarly activities focused on pedagogy, learning, and leadership.
1.2 Submit at least 5 grant proposals that provide funding for interdisciplinary collaborations by SoE faculty with other faculty within Drexel University and/or at other institutions.
1.3 Increase annually the number of quality SoE partnerships so as to facilitate the learning and work of SoE students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
1.4 Offer sponsored professional learning and community-building activities in order to strengthen the school’s culture of continuous professional learning and development.
1.5 Enhance career services support for students and alumni.
1.6 Establish a new graduate level program in Counseling
1.7 Strengthen efforts to build a more diverse faculty and staff [through enhanced recruitment and retention efforts and other means].
Goal 2: Recruit and retain a diverse national and international student body that is dedicated to pursuing careers in education and related fields.
2.1 Increase recruitment activities targeting a more diverse population of students from both underrepresented minority groups in the US and international students.
2.2 Provide professional learning experiences around strategies that attract and retain a d diverse student body.
2.3 Double the number of full-time on campus teacher education students at the undergraduate level
2.4 Increase each year the retention rate across our entire student body
Goal 3: Promote the use of educational technologies as a means of enhancing student learning and making lifelong learning accessible to all students.
3.1 Build a stronger SoE community for current students, faculty, and alumni through the optimization of online interactions
3.2 Effectively integrate cutting edge educational technologies into courses, to make them more responsive to the needs of a diverse student body through faculty professional development.
3.3 Identify best practices in, and develop new instructional designs and assessment
methods for, delivering computer-mediated and online instruction that enhances access for students.
Goal 4: To translate teaching and research into civic engagement and transformative partnerships with the communities in which we have, and would like to have, a presence.
4.1 Provide all pre-service teachers with novel and cutting-edge opportunities to participate in interactions with local school teachers, administrators and community leaders and long-term engagements that last beyond student teaching, in order to provide the best preparation for teaching careers.
4.2 Provide all faculty and students with opportunities to engage in community-based research projects and/or advocacy partnerships, including those funded by external sources, that address pre K-adult education priorities
4.3 Build relationships with organizations that provide our student with opportunities for learning experiences in workforce and human development that extend beyond the walls of educational institutions.
4.4 Involve our alumni in our civic engagement and partnership efforts.
4.5 Initiate and sustain an Urban Education Lecture Series that engages the Drexel community and the public in efforts to improve the education offered to urban youth.
Goal 5: To be a recognized leader in the preparation of STEM educators serving audiences pre-K through adult.
5.1 Cultivate a strong STEM learning and research community among faculty, staff, students, and alumni.
5.2 Enrich the STEM learning experiences of both pre-service and in-service teachers whom SoE serves through credit and non-credit programs
5.3 Strengthen collaborations within the School of Education, such as with the Math Forum and the Learning Technologies team, and develop new collaborations within the University, such as with the Academy of Natural Sciences.
