PHILADELPHIA, PA, November 6, 2013

The Math Forum has partnered with local organizations to establish the Philadelphia Engineering/Math Challenge (EMC), a program that enhances teaching and learning of problem-solving and communication in Philadelphia public schools. In addition to the Math Forum, sponsors include Philadelphia Math & Science Coalition, local chapters of the National Society of Black Engineers, and Drexel University.

The program employs a series of school-based collaborative practice sessions and university-based competitive events focused on math and engineering. Teams of eight students in grads 8-12 from twelve Philadelphia public schools work with their school’s math teachers and undergraduate mentors from Drexel. They will develop creative solutions to engineering challenges, create short videos that model math questions about the real world, present written and oral presentations to open-ended math problems, and compete in a math quiz bowl.

Competition will be held at Drexel on Nov. 20, Jan. 29, March 19, and June 4. Professionals in the STEM fields will serve as judges and guest speakers.
