COOP 101 Course
COOP 101 is a 10-week, noncredit pass/fail course that meets once a week. It is designed to help students with all aspects of career planning and the co-op job search. Passing the class is required for any student in a co-op program prior to beginning their first co-op experience. Below is a brief description of the policies of the class.
Scheduling of COOP 101
Students are placed into sections by college and sometimes by major. COOP 101 is scheduled on behalf of students at least three terms before their assigned co-op cycle. Five year students with spring/summer cycles will be scheduled for the class four terms before their assigned co-op cycle since they are on summer vacation during the term they would normally take the class. Changes cannot be made to registration without the approval of the students’ academic advisor and the SCDC Assistant Director for Curriculum Development/Academic Integration. Students have ultimate responsibility for checking their schedules to make sure they know when and where their class has been scheduled.
Transfer students are scheduled into COOP 101 the term they arrive.
Withdrawing from COOP 101
Students may not withdraw from COOP 101 without compelling circumstances.
Requests to be dropped from COOP 101 because of future intended changes.
In order for COOP 101 to be dropped from a student’s schedule because of an intended future change (changing to a four year or non co-op program or intent to transfer), students must complete required paperwork to change programs or withdraw (for a future term) AND that paperwork must be fully processed by the university and the co-op cycle removed. When these intentions are communicated verbally or via email, and required paperwork that would make the change official has not been submitted, students cannot be dropped from the class.
Failing COOP 101
Students who fail COOP 101 once will need to retake the class the next available term the course is offered prior to participating in their first co-op. An NCR or ‘failure’ will be reflected on their transcript. In addition, a Career Block or ‘hold’ will be placed on their Drexel account until they successfully complete the class. This hold will prevent them from using the SCDConline system which allows them to search for jobs.
If a student fails COOP 101 and their assigned cycle begins the term immediately following the term they take the class, their co-op cycle will be removed. This may result in their having to return to classes during a term they were supposed to be out on co-op. This can cause significant financial aid problems, generate a higher bill, and may delay their graduation date. As already indicated, student will need to re-register for COOP 101 during the next available term they are taking classes.
If a student fails COOP 101 twice, they will be permanently ineligible to participate in co-op at all. All future co-op cycles will be removed. This will cause significant financial aid and billing implications. This may prevent graduation from a student’s program if there is not a non co-op option.
