Message from the Vice Provost: Drexel Co-op and the Affordable Care Act

As a result of different interpretations of the Affordable Care Act (ObamaCare), your co-op employer, now or in the future, may offer you health insurance coverage as part of their terms of employment. It is your decision if you would like to enroll in an employer's heath insurance plan, however, understand that as a full-time Drexel student, you are required to provide proof of coverage on annual basis. Since you are considered a full-time student during class terms as well as the terms you are on co-op assignment, the expectation of maintaining health coverage remains the same each term of enrollment.

Should your employer offer you coverage, and should you choose to enroll in your employer's health plan, I would like to make you aware of the following considerations.

  • There may be costs/additional deductions from your co-op pay check;
  • You may experience gaps in health coverage as you move from your current plan to a new plan;
  • Additionally, once your co-op employment (and related coverage) ends, you will need to identify and enroll in new health coverage as you return to Drexel for subsequent class terms.

An offer of health coverage, and your decision to enroll in a health plan is a determination made by employers and their employees. As new provisions of the Affordable Care Act/ObamaCare are made effective, please note that the Steinbright Career Development Center cannot offer interpretations nor actionable advice to students or employers regarding health insurance plans.

I am hopeful this letter can begin a meaningful conversation regarding your insurance options between you, your employer, and where necessary, the primary enrollee of your current insurance policy.
