Research Extra Compensation Guidelines

Faculty will be eligible to receive extra compensation for research activity when a faculty member holds a nine-month appointment and receives salary support from an externally funded grant or contract for the time not covered by the academic appointment (usually during the summer). The faculty member may receive up to one-ninth of his or her academic base salary times the number of months spent in full-time service on the project during the three months (usually summer) that the faculty member is not under contract.

In compliance with the NSF 2/9th rule on summer salaries and the OMB Circular A-21 guidance on, generally no more than 2 accumulated summer months per year may be supported by federal sponsored projects. However, up to three months of summer compensation may be paid, if permitted by the granting agency and the faculty member signs a statement which is countersigned by the department head that he/she will not take any summer vacation. In no case will payments exceed one-third of the base academic salary.

Faculty with nine month appointments initiate requests for extra compensation through the Electronic Personnel Action Forms system. These requests should be electronically submitted for approval for the period that pay is being requested. If you need assistance with this process, please see your department administrator for guidance.
