Message from Department Head, James Herbert, PhD
Welcome to the Drexel University Department of Psychology
As Head of Drexel’s Department of Psychology, I welcome you to our website. This site provides a good deal of information about the department; our faculty, professional staff, and students, and the research, teaching, and training that take place here. Ours is a friendly, supportive, and congenial department. It is also a very productive group, with coursework, research projects, and training conducted across a wide range of areas.
The department has been nationally recognized for research productivity. It features four graduate programs:
- A Ph.D. program in clinical psychology, with specialty concentrations in neuropsychology, forensic psychology, health psychology, and cognitive behavior therapy
- A law-psychology program, in which students simultaneously pursue their Ph.D. in psychology and their J.D. in Drexel’s Earle Mack School of Law
- An applied cognitive and brain sciences Ph.D. program
- A research-oriented general masters program (not a clinical program), which includes an option for a BS-MS degree combination for undergraduate students who are particularly interested in psychological research and possible preparation for doctoral studies
The department also features strong undergraduate teaching, research opportunities for psychology majors, and a nationally recognized honor society. In addition, we teach a number of online courses that allow students to complete a degree with a psychology major—these courses are taught with the same level of rigor and attention to learning that characterize the courses taught on campus. Psychology co-ops are increasing in number, with some opportunities to do such co-ops on campus in the research laboratories of departmental faculty members.
Our diverse faculty members hold leadership positions in national and international research and professional organizations, and are highly accomplished researchers and educators. They frequently collaborate with colleagues in other units of the College of Arts and Sciences, as well as in other Drexel colleges and schools, including the Colleges of Medicine, Public Health, Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering, among others.
This is an especially exciting time for our department, as Stratton Hall, located in the center of campus just off of the quad, is currently undergoing a complete renovation for our use. The new space will feature state-of-the-art research labs, a clinical training clinic, faculty offices, meeting rooms, and informal gathering spaces where faculty, students, and professional staff can interact.
Questions? Faculty and staff members will be pleased to talk with you. Please use the resources on this website, which may provide you with a good deal of information as well. Thank you for your interest in the psychology program at Drexel. We hope to see you on campus one day!
