Message from Department Head, Kirk Heilbrun, PhD

Welcome to the Drexel University Department of Psychology

Dr. James Herbert

As Interim Head of Drexel’s Department of Psychology, I welcome you to our website. (Our department head until 6-14, James Herbert, was selected to serve as Interim Provost effective 9-14.) This site provides information about the department: our faculty, professional staff, and students, and the research, teaching, and training that goes on. Ours is a friendly, supportive, and congenial department. It is also a very productive group, with coursework, research projects, and training conducted across a wide range of areas.

The department has been nationally recognized for research productivity. It features four graduate programs:

  • A PhD program in clinical psychology, with specialty concentrations in neuropsychology, forensic psychology, health psychology, and cognitive behavior therapy
  • A law-psychology program, in which students simultaneously pursue their PhD in psychology and their JD in Drexel’s School of Law
  • An applied cognitive and brain sciences PhD program
  • A research-oriented general masters program (not a clinical program), which includes an option for a BS-MS degree combination for undergraduate students who are particularly interested in psychological research and possible preparation for doctoral studies

The department also features strong undergraduate teaching, research opportunities for psychology majors, and a nationally recognized psychology honor society (Psi Chi). In addition, we teach a number of online courses that allow students to complete a degree with a psychology major—these courses are taught with the same level of rigor and attention to learning that characterize the courses taught on campus. Psychology co-ops are increasing in number, with some opportunities for co-ops on campus in the research laboratories of departmental faculty members.

Our diverse faculty members hold leadership positions in national and international research and professional organizations, and are highly accomplished researchers and educators. They frequently collaborate with colleagues in other departments of the College of Arts and Sciences, as well as in other Drexel colleges and schools, including the Colleges of Medicine, Public Health, Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering.

We have now been in Stratton Hall, renovated for our use, for nearly a year. This renovated space features state-of-the-art research labs, a clinical training clinic, faculty offices, meeting rooms, and informal gathering spaces where faculty, students, and professional staff can interact. Our Psychological Services Clinic is open, and our faculty, staff and students have become fully familiar with the many advantages to being in Stratton. We are pleased to welcome four new faculty members for AY14-15: Cathy Bolton, Paige Davis, Nancy Raitano Lee, and Zoe Zhang. More information about each is available on this website. We also say good-bye to two teaching faculty members who have moved on: Tamara Medina and Chuck Williams. We thank them for their good work and wish them well.

Questions? Faculty and staff members will be pleased to talk with you. Please use the resources on this website, which may provide you with a good deal of information as well. Thank you for your interest in the psychology program at Drexel. We hope to see you on campus!
