The C. & J. Nyheim Plasma Institute is nationally and internationally renowned for our contribution to science, for our research and educational programs, for people enthusiastically participating at NPI today, and especially for our alumni successfully working in academia and industry.

NPI is recognized as the birthplace of the field of Plasma Medicine, which is emulated today at more than one hundred research centers and dozens of teaching hospitals around the world. Our team of faculty, students, and staff are committed to NPI’s educational mission and to creating a collegial research environment that supports breakthroughs in plasma science and engineering.

History

The C. & J. Nyheim Plasma Institute was formed in 2002 to stimulate and coordinate research projects related to plasma and other modern high energy engineering techniques. Today NPI is the Nation's biggest plasma research center and it is an active multidisciplinary organization involving over 25 faculty members from 6 engineering departments working in close collaboration with the School of Biomedical Engineering and Health Systems, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Medicine, and College of Nursing and Health Professions. Major research directions of the Institute are focused today on plasma in Energy systems, Environmental control, Plasma electronics, and Plasma Medicine. Key projects include shale gas liquefaction, waste-to-energy conversion, hydrogen production from biomass, fuel desulfurization, produced and fracking water cleaning, water disinfection, air cleaning, plasma-assisted combustion, as well as such medical directions as treatment of cancer and other diseases, blood coagulation control, wound healing, and tissue regeneration.
