Drexel faculty mentor: Jason Baxter

Sergey Smolin received his PhD from the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department in 2017. He acquired his BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Virginia and started at Drexel in 2012. Working closely with his advisor, Professor Jason Baxter, Sergey studies Perovskite Oxide thin films for their solar energy related potential by utilizing ultrafast spectroscopy. The materials are grown by Professor Steven May in the Materials Science Department. Sergey hopes that his research will help unlock the potential of perovskite oxides for alternative energy applications.
 
In line with this goal, Sergey applied for and was accepted into the DAAD RISE Pro internship where he worked with Prof. Marcus Baer in studying interfacial properties in Perovskite Oxide thin films with x-ray techniques including synchrotron-based techniques. The research will explore the effect of interfacial properties on photovoltaic performance.
