Successful applicants to the Custom-Designed Major are highly motivated and creative, and they have demonstrated academic and extracurricular achievements that place them among the top tier of their peers. Most students enrolled in the Custom-Designed Major are also members of the Honors Program. Each student accepted into the program will be advised by Custom-Designed Major faculty and staff. Additionally, each accepted student will be closely mentored by one or more Drexel faculty members who have expertise in at least one of the disciplines comprising the student’s proposed course of study.
Students may be admitted as entering freshmen or by transfer, or internally to Drexel as a change of major (no later than a student’s sophomore or pre-junior year, depending on co-op plan). For additional information about applying to this program, contact the Program Director.
Incoming Freshmen/Transfer Students
Admission to the Custom-Designed Major will be determined on the basis of an application portfolio. In addition to the standard Admissions application (which includes the student’s transcript and SAT scores), the portfolio will contain:
- A vision statement describing in detail what the student hopes to accomplish during his or her time in the program, as well as explaining why the student’s educational goals cannot be met by pursuing a preexisting Drexel major.
- A proposed plan of study that details, term by term, a plausible curriculum for achieving the student’s aims by drawing upon two or more existing Drexel programs.
- Two letters of support from individuals who can speak to the student’s desire and ability to embark on an unconventional, individualized course of study
- When requested, examples of projects completed independently by the student, in either a school or an extracurricular setting.

Students seeking to change major into the Custom-Designed Major must schedule an initial advising meeting with the Program Manager/Director. The appropriateness of initiating the application process to the Major will be determined during this meeting. Students are encouraged to fill out the attached forms prior to the meeting in order to help guide the conversation. If it is deemed appropriate for the student to begin the application process, he or she must submit the application portfolio materials listed above.
