The Story of Tania Jeong at Drexel, just three weeks into her Spring Term
April 24, 2017
Seeking an international opportunity in the United States, Tania Jeong, an exchange student from Brazil, decided her destination would be Drexel. Fresh off the plane from Sao Paulo, she is spending the spring term as a Dragon studying marketing in LeBow, and is finding ways to explore extracurricular options.
Tania Jeong, An Exchange Student from Brazil
Tania is a senior at the University of Sao Paulo (USP), one of the most prestigious universities in Brazil and Latin America. When she was considering her options to study abroad, Drexel’s location and the proximity to her relatives in Virginia became key factors in her final decision.
Tania was born in Korea and moved to Sao Paulo with her family when she was three years old. Her Brazilian home is the most populous city in the Americas, and Tania says her hometown is more like New York City than Philadelphia.
Tania's Life in Brazil
Tania is currently studying marketing at LeBow College of Business and is taking 12 credits this term. After only three weeks on Drexel’s campus, she has already made friends with her classmates and roommates.
She thinks the content of the courses here are similar with the courses at USP, but her Drexel courses focus more on practical learning. Tania said that she likes the way teachers at Drexel focus not only on theoretical perspectives, but also on practical applications. She is also learning how to manage her coursework in the fast-paced 10-week quarter.
She is adjusting to life at Drexel, thanks to all of the help she has received from the Study Abroad Office. She praised Mary Hagenbach, the advisor for inbound exchange students in the Study Abroad Office, for helping her through the process of studying at Drexel.
“I’m staying at North Hall, so it’s really close to the Study Abroad Office. I can cross the street to ask questions at any time. They are helping me a lot,” Tania said.
Only after a few weeks in Philly, Tania already has been exploring the city and the area around Drexel, particularly enjoying the restaurants on Sansom Street. Right before this interview, she was having lunch at a Korean restaurant on 40th Street. Tania hopes she will be able to find a handball team to join at Drexel, but in the meantime, she is having a great time trying out new things and is looking for a way to extend her one-term exchange program.
Tania was surprised to find out that one similarity between Philadelphia and Sao Paolo is the fickle weather. “It is spring now. You expect that it is going to be warm every day, but the weather changes all the time. It is freezing one day and hot again the next. It’s sunny in the morning and in the afternoon it’s cloudy.”
Despite the unpredictable weather, Tania said she is enjoying Drexel’s urban campus environment, and mentioned that she likes the style of architecture here.
Tania's Favorite Place at Drexel
She also feels safe in Philly, where she is comfortable taking a walk whenever she wants. Her favorite places on campus are the Recreation Center and the section of Lancaster Walk right behind it, where the cherry trees were just beginning to bloom when she arrived on campus.
She said she loves it there, and goes there to enjoy the view whenever she has the chance.
Tania is also a frequent visitor to the Recreation Center. She likes to try different opportunities in the Recreation Center, such as the climbing wall. “I have free time but I don’t feel bored, because I have a lot of things to do. There are a lot of options here at Drexel, you just have to search for them,” Tania said.
