Jeff Havens Presents “How To Get Fired!”

Sponsored by: Campus Activities Board (CAB), Drexel University
Tuesday, October 11, 2011
7:00pm
Mitchell Auditorium, Bossone Research Enterprise Center
3120 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA
“How to Get Fired!” is a hilarious discussion of exactly what not to do in the workplace and is a fast-paced, multimedia barrage that is both entertaining and relevant, especially in today’s economy.  College students are bombarded with ‘serious’ lectures on how to behave, how to become productive members of society, and how to successfully transition into the working world.  This hour-long lecture does all that and is guaranteed to keep listeners on the edge of their seat.  You’ll learn the Four Pillars of Poverty - fake your résumé, establish your incompetence, destroy your work ethic, and alienate your coworkers - and the lecture will 'encourage' you to do the top ten things that most commonly cause employees to lose their jobs before wrapping up with a more serious discussion about how to successfully transition into the working world.  For more information about the speaker, visit http://jeffhavens.com. For more details about the event, email CAB@drexel.edu.

Perceptions
Presented by: Brianne Tangney, Program Director – Community Partnerships,
Lindy Center for Civic Engagement, Drexel University

Tuesday, November 15, 2011
12:00pm-1:30pm
MacAlister Hall, Room 2019 (33rd and Chestnut Streets, Philadelphia, PA)
There is an African ethic that is represented by the word "Ubuntu". Although it does not translate directly to English, it roughly means "I am because you are", and refers to the interconnectedness of human beings. While this is a beautiful concept of community, there are also negative implications. Whether consciously or subconsciously, we constantly define ourselves in relation to others: how we are "similar" or "different" to or from another person; whether we have shared or separate experiences; what is "normal" or "familiar" versus what is "foreign".  This workshop is aimed to look at how our culture, life experiences, and the assumptions we make shape the way we see the world and interact with others on a daily basis. We will explore how, without reflection, our personal identity can lead to dangerous situations of ethnocentrism, stereotyping, and labeling of people who we view as different or "others". The session will include a discussion of personal experiences and how we can be more aware of our perceptions, especially in our public service.
*This “CEO LEAD Certified” Workshop is sponsored by the Lindy Center for Civic Engagement at Drexel University.

Citizenship: Rights & Responsibilities
Presented by: Thomas Dahan, Program Director – High School Mentoring Program,
Lindy Center for Civic Engagement, Drexel University

Friday, November 18, 2011
1:30pm-3:00pm
MacAlister Hall, Room 2019 (33rd and Chestnut Streets, Philadelphia, PA)
This workshop is designed to engage participants in thinking about how they and others tend to define citizenship -- in theory and in practice. It aims to spur dialogue across some commonly held beliefs about what it means to be active citizens in the United States.  It also aims to help people think critically about the way in which conceptions and rights of citizenship had changed historically, including through the amendments to the Constitution and the Bill of Rights (which are included in the workshop as handouts, along with a provocative article upon which the exercise is based).  Finally, this session helps participants to consider connections between our legal and political rights and forms of citizen action.
*This “CEO LEAD Certified” Workshop is sponsored by the Lindy Center for Civic Engagement at Drexel University.
