Drexel Announces Launch of New Center for Hospitality and Sport Management

Dr. Jonathan Deutsch will head up the new Center for Hospitality and Sport Managament
Drexel University announced the launch of a new Center for Hospitality and Sport Management, reporting directly to the provost. Formerly in the Goodwin College of Professional Studies, the freestanding Center will include programs in sport management, hospitality management, culinary arts and food science.
The Center will be headed up by Dr. Jonathan Deutsch, who previously directed Drexel’s hospitality, culinary and food science programs.
“This change reflects the growing economic importance of tourism and leisure in Greater Philadelphia and across the nation, as well Drexel’s strength in producing accomplished and motivated professionals for those industries,” said President John A. Fry. “Drexel’s commitment to the Center for Hospitality and Sport Management is very much in keeping with the Drexel spirit, and we look forward to seeing these programs thrive. As we attract even more outstanding students, we are hopeful that the program will grow into a college or school.”
The Center for Hospitality and Sport Management offers undergraduate degrees in culinary arts, culinary science, hospitality management and sport management as well as minors in coaching leadership, culinary arts, food science, gaming and casino operations.
Graduate degrees are offered in sport management (both online and on-campus), food science and hospitality management (online only). A certificate is offered in gaming and casino management. Accelerated degree programs, such as a combined Bachelor of Science and Master of Business Administration, are available in culinary arts, culinary science and hospitality management.
Through a focus on experiential learning and co-op opportunities, the program is positioned to fulfill distinct market needs. It provides experiences in sport ticketing, restaurant management, arena management, food product development, recipe development, coaching, tour guiding, commercial kitchen design and layout, kitchen gardening and hotel front desk operations.

We look forward to offering unparalleled experiential learning opportunities for students, serving as an event and program hub for industry professionals and conducting research that helps us improve the ways we do business in food, hospitality and sport.”
Deutsch is a classically trained chef who is an alumnus of Drexel’s hospitality management program and earned his doctorate in food studies and food management from New York University. He founded the culinary arts program at Kingsborough College of the City University of New York and headed the program for 12 years while also teaching at CUNY’s Graduate Center, before returning to Drexel this year.
He is the author of the culinary textbook Culinary Improvisation. Deutsch worked in a variety of foodservice settings including catering, product development, restaurants and luxury inns, both in the United States and abroad.
