Drexel Expands Integration of Education and Employment with New Labor Markets Center
February 7, 2011
Drexel University has created the interdisciplinary Center for Labor Markets and Policy to research and observe the labor market and better align the University’s educational training and work-force development efforts with the job market.
The University has appointed Dr. Paul E. Harrington, the former associate director of the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University, as director of the new Center.
The Center will support a wide range of scholarly and educational initiatives associated with national labor markets and will complement the University’s nationally renowned cooperative education program, in which students alternate periods of academic study with full-time paid professional employment.
“We want to be a source of expertise and understanding in this area,” Harrington said. “We will be a research complement to Drexel’s effective activity in the area of cooperative education and the integration of employment and higher education.”
The Center will focus on research, evaluation, training and technical assistance, along with an active public speaking and media program.
“It is expected that some significant results of high impact will be produced by the Center to guide work-force policy and to create new best practices for institutions of higher education to better connect academics with careers,” said Dr. N. John DiNardo, vice provost for academic affairs.
The University anticipates the Center will become the regionally and nationally recognized site of research expertise in labor markets and work-force issues that are intertwined in economic development and growth.
“We will build relationships in the Greater Philadelphia region and the Mid-Atlantic states,” said Harrington, who joined Drexel in January and will teach classes in education, public policy, and economics in the University’s Goodwin College.
Harrington, who has authored or co-authored 14 books, has studied work-force development and human resource policy for the Pennsylvania Department of Labor, the Rhode Island Board of Education, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research.
Harrington received the “Award in Recognition of Outstanding Contributions to Our Workforce” from the Massachusetts Workforce Board Association in 2004 and the “Building a World Class Workforce Award” from the U.S. Department of Labor, National Association of State Workforce Agencies in 2003.
