Fry will join the NCAA Board of Directors which has final authority on all Division I budget matters and oversees the Division I Council, the Committee on Infractions and the Committee on Academics.
Colonial Athletic Association Commissioner Joe D’Antonio has announced that Drexel University President John Fry has been selected as the Conference’s representative on the NCAA Division I Board of Directors.
“I would like to thank President Fry for his willingness to represent the CAA on the NCAA Board of Directors,” D’Antonio said. “He brings a vast array of experience in higher education to this role, and the entire NCAA membership will benefit from his knowledge and leadership.”
Fry has served as president at Drexel since 2010. Under his leadership, Drexel has set a national example for the execution of public-private partnerships and as an anchor institution for civic engagement with an economic development focus on its surrounding Philadelphia community.
“I am honored to represent the CAA at the NCAA Division I Board of Directors on behalf of my colleagues at institutions that span a geographic footprint from Boston to Charleston, South Carolina,” said Fry. “Having successfully navigated a complicated national landscape for intercollegiate athletics during the pandemic, the CAA has much to contribute to the national conversation at the NCAA.”
Fry has a deep background of leadership in collegiate athletics. He is entering his second year as the chair of the CAA Board of Directors, which is comprised of the presidents and chancellors of the CAA’s member institutions. He played a critical role in helping guide the Conference through the challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-21.
In addition, Fry has previously served as chair of the NCAA Div. III Presidents Council and of US Squash, the national governing body for the sport. His efforts have helped to grow and strengthen the Philadelphia sports community by bringing the U.S. Open Squash Championships to the city in 2011 and facilitating the creation of the Arlen Specter US Squash Center, which will serve as the national training center for the sport, near the heart of Drexel’s campus. He also helped lead the effort to restore the Schuylkill River so it can remain a nationally renowned host venue for rowing events, including the Dad Vail Regatta.
The NCAA Division I Board of Directors has final authority on all Division I budget matters. The group also oversees the Division I Council, the Committee on Infractions and the Committee on Academics.
There are 24 members of the NCAA Division I Board of Directors, which includes 20 chief executive officers, one director of athletics, one senior woman administrator, one faculty athletics representative and one student-athlete.
