Just in time to chase the last of those winter blues away, the Drexel Recreation Center will hold its annual Indoor Triathlon on March 19. You’ll be able to swim, bike and run while the sheltering walls of the Recreation Center keep the chilling weather at bay.

But don’t let anybody try to tell you it isn’t a “real” triathlon just because it’s indoors. Andrew Case, manager of memberships and programs for the Drexel Athletics Department, won’t have it.

“The Drexel University Indoor Triathlon fulfills all of the necessary requirements that make up a triathlon,” said Case. Participants will be able to tackle the full Dragon triathlon, which consists of swimming 750 yards, bicycling the equivalent of 12 miles and running the equivalent of three. Those feeling intimidated by those distances can take on the Half Dragon, which is only 300 yards swimming, 6 miles biking and 1 mile running.

Additionally, a duathlon will also be offered, which replaces the swimming portion with another session of running. Half and full versions are also available for the duathlon. All racers will utilize a stationary spin bike and a treadmill.

“This is a unique experience for the people of Philadelphia during the winter months when competitors are anxiously awaiting the warmer months to take part in races,” Case added.

All fitness levels are encouraged to give the event a try. Registration is open in advance or at 7 a.m. the day of the event. The fee is $40 and includes a race day T-shirt. Proceeds from the fees will benefit St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children.
