The varsity basketball court at the Daskalakis Athletic Center will once again be transformed into a world-class squash arena as the world’s greatest men’s and women’s squash players will compete in the 2012 Delaware Investments U.S. Open Squash Championships from Oct. 4-12.

The top 10 ranked men and women in the world, including all four of last years’ finalists, will play in the weeklong event. In addition, a number of local competitors will be vying for a place in the field during the open qualifying tournament. A combined prize purse of $185,000 is on the line, making this one of the most hotly contested events on the 2012 tour.

All Drexel faculty and staff are invited to attend the tournament free of charge throughout the week. Qualifying matches will be played from Oct. 4-7. The top 16 players will take the court on both the men’s and women’s sides of the bracket starting at noon on Monday, Oct. 8.  The championship matches will be contested On Friday, Oct. 12 at 6:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN3.

This marks the second consecutive year that Drexel has hosted the U.S. Open in the city where American squash got its start back in 1904 with the founding of the United States Squash Racquets Association. The popularity of squash at Drexel has continued to grow with the addition of men’s and women’s varsity teams in 2011. Both squads are now nationally ranked under the guidance of Head Coach John White, who was ranked No. 1 in the world during his playing career.
