Drexels Student-Run Radio Station Named Station of the Year
Drexel University’s student-run radio station WKDU 91.7FM was named College Radio’s “Station of the Year” at the College Music Journal’s (CMJ) annual awards ceremony. The CMJ College Radio Awards took place October 21, 2010 during College Day at the CMJ 2010 Music Marathon.
WKDU 91.7 also won the “Biggest Champion of the Local Scene” award for its efforts to incorporate local Philadelphia talent into its music program. WKDU received both awards and shares the “Station of the Year” title with Concordia University's AM radio station CJLO 1690-AM in Montreal, Canada.
“WKDU is proud to receive this prestigious award,” said Larry Epstein, program director of the Entertainment & Arts major. “The station’s longevity, its student-run operating style, and it’s free format programming are all factors that contributed to its recognition as station of the year.”
Additionally, a Drexel music industry alumna, Karen Moran-Thomas, won the “Promoter of the Year” award. Participating stations were nominated by CMJ's member radio stations and affiliated promoters earlier this year. CMJ attendees voted during the Music Marathon leading up to the ceremony.
WKDU is run entirely by students, maintaining a broadcasting range that reaches Philadelphia and parts of south New Jersey. WKDU's programming holds to a free-format policy allowing each show to be a true representation of the DJ's artistic expression. Some of the genres featured include reggae, rock, urban, gospel, electronic, metal and pop.
Aside from being Philadelphia’s longest running non-commercial radio station, WKDU is also the only free-format non-commercial FM station in the city. Its slogan is “commit radio warfare.”
CMJ is a network of musicians, industry professionals and fans. The annual CMJ five-day music marathon held on October 19-23 in New York City presented over a 1,000 bands. CMJ’s objective is to introduce new music to fans via media, events and publications, working primarily with younger adults and college-age audiences. It is closely tied to noncommercial and college radio.
