Security Magazine Ranks Drexel Public Safety Program No 4 Nationally

December 7, 2010

Security magazine has ranked Drexel University fourth in the nation for safety among United States colleges and universities for 2010. “Drexel’s Department of Public Safety prides itself on its holistic approach in maintaining a safe campus environment,” said Domenic Ceccanecchio, M.S., CPP, senior associate vice president for public safety. “We are honored to be recognized by Security magazine.” Drexel is one of only three Pennsylvania universities to be ranked by Security magazine joining the University of Pennsylvania at No.1 and Penn State University at No. 16 among colleges and universities nationwide. The 2010 ranking is an increase of seven places in 2009 and 41 places in 2008. The Department of Public Safety initiated several community-based programs over the past year to address potential crimes, such as a vehicle theft awareness campaign in which cars with valuables in plain view are given an informational “ticket” to educate owners about how they can help reduce theft from vehicles. Other awareness programs focus on not leaving valuables unattended, residential theft and bike safety. In addition, Drexel University’s Police Department participated in over 100 in-service and external training programs in areas that included active shooter training, defense tactics training and crime scene training. The Drexel University Police Department provides 24/7 patrols with 33 full-time sworn municipal police officers certified through the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Municipal Police Officers Education and Training Commission (MPOETC) with law enforcement authority at Drexel University’s three Philadelphia campuses: University City Main Campus, Center City Hahnemann Campus, and Queen Lane Medical Campus. ### News media contact: Niki Gianakaris, director, Drexel News Bureau 215-895-6741, 215-778-7752 (cell), ngianakaris@drexel.edu
