WHAT: Science is everywhere and shopping is no exception as 30 girls from Philadelphia middle schools will find out when they go on a “science” spree in Macy’s Center City in search of the chemistry, science and technology that makes shopping at Macy’s “magic.”Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) are important disciplines for students since they teach strong logical thinking as well as practical skills. Yet too often, girls buy into societal pressures that these subjects are “not for me.” Drexel’s School of Education and Macy’s are about to change that by showing girls the science in something they like to do, shop. Teachers say girls have enjoyed remarkable success in classrooms with hands-on experiences through real-world connections. The girls will: • Select items at the jewelry counter and identify the elements used to make the jewels as well as the atomic weight of each item. • Adjust side mirrors in the fitting room as they learn about the reflection of light and angles in mirrors. • Feel the jeans to identify the difference in fibers used. • Study the physics of revolving doors and escalators, and more.
