A year ago, Drexel University administrators and faculty were joined by elected officials and civic leaders to mark the historic opening of Drexel’s Sacramento Center for Graduate Studies, housed blocks from California’s State Capitol.Just a year later, Drexel has established firm roots in the community, tripling its original enrollment to more than 175 students and offering new and unique opportunities for advanced degrees.The Center now offers eight master’s programs and one doctorate, up from four programs last January, and more are under consideration.“Although we understood the economy might present some serious challenges , we were confident that Drexel University’s proven, dynamic approach to learning and focus on the next generation of leaders would be a good fit for the Greater Sacramento region,” said Drexel President C.R. “Chuck” Pennoni. “We’re very excited our enrollment has grown so rapidly in one year and delighted that we’ve been able to establish such strong relationships with so many community, business and education leaders,” said Carl “Tobey” Oxholm III, senior vice president and dean of Drexel’s Center for Graduate Studies. “I am glad to have helped introduce this very special region to a nationally top-ranked private, non-profit university.” The Center’s most popular program is the master’s in business administration, which is ranked among the top 10 part-time programs nationally for working professionals. Other programs include public health, information systems (third in the country), library and information science (ninth in the country), human resource development management (unique in the region), and higher education. The facility is designed for working professionals pursuing graduate degrees in the evenings as well as businesses and associations seeking high-tech meeting space during the day and on weekends.Drexel is now accepting applications as it prepares for a new incoming students, with six programs beginning again in March. Drexel offers a number of financial aid and scholarship programs in Sacramento, including the $10 million Sacramento Leadership Fellowship, Papadakis Fellowships for those in government agencies and non-profits, the Yellow Ribbon Program providing free tuition for certain post-9/11 veterans, and assistance for students who have been laid off from their jobs.
