Bright Colors Will Dominate Collections at Drexel Annual Student Fashion Show
Bright-colors, fun dresses and non-conformist, one-shoulder boho trends that will make consumers feel great despite the gloomy economy will dominate Drexel University’s annual student fashion show.
Presented by the Fashion Design and Design & Merchandising Programs in Drexel’s Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts and Design, this year’s show will be held for the first time at the Urban Outfitters Corporate Headquarters Campus at the Navy Yard on June 6, at 4 and 8 p.m.
The annual Drexel Fashion Show will feature original designs from 20 graduating seniors and eight graduate students ranging from eveningwear, men’s and women’s wear, sportswear and swimwear, children’s wear, lingerie and more. Student collections compete for industry awards.
Highlights from the undergraduate and graduate collections, include:
• Inspired by the colors and forms found in sea life, senior Kyla Simone Hayden used embellished fisherman’s netting and water-colored swirling prints in her designs. Movement is introduced in her group by using looped fabrics.
• Australian Aboriginal culture and artwork provided the inspiration for senior Tabitha Siviy’s collection. She was drawn to the tradition of body painting and incorporated some of these forms into her sportswear collection by hand painting on the fabrics and using bold colors and linear patterns.
• The handbag collection of senior Lisa Salen is inspired by the bright colors and bohemian spirit of the 1960s. Elements borrowed from a silk print were recreated on each handbag using screen printing and appliqué techniques.
• Inspired by children costumes of late 19th century London, senior Dara Brown-Lieberson combined historic details with modern silhouettes and created contemporary children’s wear that captures the romanticism of the past.
• Modern architecture was the inspiration behind graduate student’s Stephanie Akagha’s exaggerated necklines and sleeves, while the drama and beauty of thunderstorms inspired Annie Sommer Kaufman’s line. Also a graduate student, Kaufman featured unusual proportions and striking combinations of color, sheerness and shimmer in her collection.
A VIP reception will honor Drexel alumna Carole Hochman, CEO and creative director of Carole Hochman Design Group. The Carole Hochman Design Group manufactures the designer’s own brand of sleepwear, loungewear and daywear, and owns licenses for lingerie and sleepwear collections by Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren, Jockey and Betsey Johnson.
The fashion show is produced from start to finish by Design & Merchandising students who create an impressive production to rival professional shows.
About the Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts and Design:
Drexel University’s Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design offers thirteen undergraduate and five graduate programs in media, design and the performing arts. Westphal College is home to the Mandell Theater, the Pearlstein Gallery, Drexel’s television (DUTV) and radio (WKDU) stations, the Kal Rudman Institute for Entertainment Industry Studies, MAD Dragon Records and Drexel’s Historic Costume Collection.
In January 2009, the Westphal College received the largest philanthropic gift ever recorded at Drexel, $25 million. The gift is being used for the development and expansion of the college, purchasing a 130,000 sq ft. Robert Venturi Building on Market Street. The Venturi building is one of two buildings that will serve as new homes for the design programs of the Westphal College of Media Arts & Design beginning in fall 2010.
