Drexels Center for Civic Engagement to Administer 13 Million Grant

Drexel University’s Center for Civic Engagement is the administering host of a $1.3 million Learn and Serve Higher Education Consortium grant, announced CCE director Dan Dougherty. The CCE will partner with the Philadelphia Higher Education Network for Neighborhood Development in an initiative involving economic recovery in the Philadelphia region. PHENND, a consortium of more than 30 institutions of higher education across the region, will develop and expand four regional campus-community partnership initiatives focused on key areas of economic recovery: food stamp enrollment, income tax assistance for low-income families, financial education and micro-entrepreneurship training. This asset-development program, The Credit Path, helps families become self-sufficient. PHENND will also build capacity of partnering nonprofits and their affiliates through a series of targeted programs: capacity-building workshops, student internships and student leadership development.Drexel’s CCE will serve as lead institution on the initiative managing the project’s subgrants along with fiscal and reporting responsibilities. The initiative will join higher educational institutions and non-profit organizations, involving 1,200 college and university students, 6,000 low-income individials and 500 non-profit organizations. The three-year project is expected to have an overall economic impact of $2.6 million for the Philadelphia region. Drexel’s Center for Civic Engagement promotes social responsibility and public service by facilitating community-based experiential learning for students, faculty, and staff.
