Drexel University’s student-run record label, MAD Dragon Records, has been named the 2008 “College Label of the Year” by the Independent Music Awards. MAD Dragon artist The Redwalls earned the award for their self-titled release. MAD Dragon Records is housed in Drexel’s Antoinette Westphal College of Media Arts & Design.The Redwalls were identified by music industry students in the Westphal College’s artist and repertoire class. The artist’s partnership with MAD Dragon Records was made possible through the generous support of the Kal and Lucille Rudman Institute for Entertainment Industry Studies.“We are very pleased to be honored by such a prestigious organization, this is a tribute to our students’ dedication and hard work, the support of our administration and our supremely talented artists,” said MAD Dragon President Terry Tompkins.MAD Dragon Records was awarded the 2007 “College Label of the Year” award by the Independent Music Awards for Hoots & Hellmouth, another self-titled release. Drexel’s Music Industry bachelor’s degree program allows students to gain experience working on real commercial projects for MAD Dragon Records. MAD Dragon is America’s first college record label to secure nationwide distribution through Ryko/Warner. The Independent Music Awards (IMA) is a prestigious organization that accepts entries from all over the world including the United States, Japan, Cuba, Israel, Russia and the United Kingdom. It helps Independent artists and labels overcome mainstream obstacles by placing winners and finalists in front of more than 15 million new fans via promotion, marketing and distribution.
