1000 Fifth-graders 500 3-D Models of Houses to Be Displayed at Habitat for Humanity Fundraiser

March 31, 2008

What: Five hundred imaginative, colorful 3-D models of houses and the 1,000 fifth-grade students from 125 Delaware Valley schools who created them will turn Drexel University’s basketball arena into a dazzling showroom for the Delaware Valley Habitat for Humanity’s “Build a House ... Build a Dream! Contest for Kids.”

Sponsored by Drexel’s College of Engineering and funded by donations from Greater Philadelphia businesses, the seventh annual program is designed to raise awareness of the need for affordable housing as part of the chapter’s house-building efforts in Philadelphia, Bucks, Camden, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties.

In past years, students have crafted models of houses that are energy efficient, environmentally friendly and built using bongo drums. Models will be judged on creativity, originality, use of materials and adherence to design guidelines by a 75-person panel that includes Eric Flicker, chief financial officer and treasurer of the international engineering firm Pennoni Associates and a Habitat for Humanity board member.

Visuals: • Innovatively designed 2-foot-by-3-foot models of houses featuring a range of building materials • Mario The Magnificent Dragon, Drexel’s mascot, interacting with the Phillie Phanatic and students • The teams of the top three models receiving plaques, medals and awards of $250, $150 and $100 (12:45 to 1 p.m.) • The Phillie Phanatic, Drexel alumnus Tom Burgoyne, checking out the models and high-fiving students (10 to 11 a.m.) • Proud parents and relatives

When: Saturday, April 5, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Where: Drexel’s Daskalakis Athletic Center, 33rd and Market streets
