What: To learn about the perils of drunk driving, Drexel University students will get behind the wheel and feel what it’s like to drive under the influence through a state-of-the-art simulator. The simulator will mimic both drinking and driving.Students will be seated in a working real car, a Hyundai Accent. Mechanical disks under the front wheels will keep the vehicle stationary while sensors will record data and feed it into a computer used to simulate the course. The course will be simulated through a head-mounted display similar to virtual reality goggles. Alcohol consumption will be simulated by changes in the head-mounted display. At the end of the session, the simulator will display the blood alcohol level and every infraction caused by the student while “drinking and driving” as if an officer were following the student the entire time. Who: Drexel’s Division of Student Life and the Office of Alcohol, Other Drug, and Health Education are sponsoring the event. John Watson, director of alcohol, other drug and health education and assistant director of counseling, will be available to answer questionsThe University has partnered with Professionals Encouraging Educational Reform Statewide (PEERS), a Michigan-based organization dedicated to increasing awareness of the dangers and consequences of unhealthy decisions, who will bring their patent-pending AWARE III simulator to campus.
