As a counterpoint to the world economic downturn, Drexel University’s LeBow College of Business and its Laurence A. Baiada Center for Entrepreneurship in Technology will harness the economic promise and positive energy of enterprising young entrepreneurs during Global Entrepreneurship Week, which will run from November 17 to November 23, 2008. “Drexel University is renowned for educating our students to be innovative, entrepreneurial, and leaders in their academic and professional lives,” said Drexel President Constantine Papadakis. “Just as the University embodies enterprising optimism, Global Entrepreneurship Week conveys that optimism across Greater Philadelphia. Events held during this week will demonstrate how the entrepreneurial spirit provides a remedy to current economic and financial challenges.”Global Entrepreneurship Week will connect young people around the globe to the world entrepreneurial community to generate ideas and develop their potential as innovators. The week is being celebrated throughout Drexel University by its College of Nursing, LeBow College of Business, College of Engineering, School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems, College of Information Science and Technology, and Westphal College of Media Arts & Design.The week begins with “Innovations for the Aging Baby Boomer” on Monday, November 17 at 10 a.m. on Drexel’s University City Main Campus. Keynote speaker Dr. Majd Alwan, East Coast director for the Center for Aging Services Technologies, will discuss how present innovations are being developed through an interdisciplinary effort of corporations, government, health care organizations and academia that will enable older persons to remain in their homes safely for a longer period of time. This presentation features a “concept competition” where students develop concepts for new products, services, or businesses that will benefit seniors. Among the judges will be former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Coop. Winners will receive cash prizes. Other events include: --Opportunities for Entrepreneurship for the Non-U.S. Citizen | Nov.18, 5 p.m. The Baiada Center and the Graduate Entrepreneurship Group present Suh Min, attorney at law, Fox Rothschild LLP, and Mark G. McCreary, corporate attorney, Fox Rothschild LLP, who will discuss the requirements for non-U.S. citizens to start their own business, and the opportunities and challenges for specific industries.--Open Innovation – Sharing Intellectual Capital | Nov. 19, 8 – 10 a.m. This networking breakfast will bring together members of Drexel University’s student clubs with regional entrepreneurs to exchange ideas, meet new contacts and collaborate on potential entrepreneurial initiatives. --Spirit of Entrepreneurship in Life-Saving Solutions | Nov. 19, Noon – 5 p.m. The School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems will celebrate its 10th anniversary and the 50th anniversary of its precursor the Biomedical Engineering and Science Institute with a luncheon, showcase and opening of its Bionanotechnology Laboratory.--SLA Creations | Nov. 19, 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. The Baiada Center will host a business concept training session for high school students from the Science Leadership Academy. --Being Your Own Boss: The Road from College Student to Entrepreneur | Nov. 19, 5 p.m. This panel discussion, hosted by LeBow College’s Office of Undergraduate Career Services and the Drexel Entrepreneur Association, will feature successful entrepreneurs and business professionals who will offer tips on how to start a business.--Youth Experiences: Influence on Entrepreneurial Success | Nov. 20, 7:30 a.m. Whether talking about sports, scouting, music, dance or chess, this panel explores whether or not competing and excelling at the highest levels early in life influence an individual's success as an entrepreneur later in life. --The Science of Business - Leadership and Entrepreneurship | Nov. 20, 6 – 7:30 p.m. LeBow College management professors Dr. Patrick Saparito and Dr. Jonathan Ziegert lead a panel discussion that will focus on the similarities and differences between leadership and entrepreneurship. --What It Means to Be an Entrepreneur | Nov. 21, 9 a.m. to noon Companies in the Baiada Center business incubator present their companies to high school students enrolled in The National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) program.Global Entrepreneurship Week is the outgrowth of Entrepreneurship Week USA 2007 and inspired by Enterprise Week, which originated in the United Kingdom in 2004. Last year Enterprise Week and Entrepreneurship Week involved 2,790 partner organizations and nearly 930,000 individuals.
