11th Street Family Health Services Center of Drexel Named a National Model for Care DeliveryPHILADELPHIA (May 7, 2008) — The 11th Street Family Health Services Center of Drexel University has been selected as a national model for care delivery by Innovative Care Models, announced Dr. Gloria Donnely, dean of Drexel’s College of Nursing and Health Professions.The Center was among just 24 “acute care,” “bridge continuum” and “comprehensive care” organizations named national models as part of a research project conducted by Health Workforce Solutions LLC and funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.The Center opened in 2002 through a partnership between the North Philadelphia community and Drexel’s College of Nursing and Health Professions that began in 1996. It provides a comprehensive range of health services, including physical examinations, diagnosis and treatment of illness, family planning, health maintenance and disease prevention services, dental, nutrition, physical fitness and behavioral health.The target population of the Center is medically underserved, low-income patients and vulnerable adults with chronic illness in a section of Philadelphia known as the 11th Street Corridor. The corridor encompasses Spring Garden and Cecil B. Moore streets and Fifth and Broad streets. More than half its patients have Medicaid coverage, and an additional 33 percent are uninsured.The number of visits to the Center has increased markedly, from 2,200 in 2003 to 10,000 in 2007. Additionally, the number of visits for the Center’s behavioral health services increased from 210 in 2003 to 3,200 in 2007 and for its dental services, from 950 visits in 2005, when services were first offered, to 6,800 in 2007.The Center’s director, Dr. Patricia Gerrity, was named an Edge Runner in 2007 by the American Academy of Nursing. The award recognizes nursing professionals who are on the cutting edge of finding new ways to integrate the mental and physical health of patients.
