Drexel University has appointed Mark Greenberg, founding dean of the Pennoni Honors College, as Interim Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs, announced Drexel President Constantine Papadakis. “Dr. Greenberg enjoys the respect and support of colleagues across the University, which he has served for more than 29 years,” said Papadakis. “In his role as interim provost, Dr. Greenberg has the mandate to advance Drexel’s strategic plan, enhancing the quality of our academic enterprise while ensuring that the University continues the great momentum that has been underway. He is a proven leader whose experience will be uniquely helpful to Drexel.”Greenberg said, “I am pleased to serve as provost during a time of great plans and achievements for Drexel. The University has currently embarked on the second year of a five-year Strategic Plan. It’s also the year when Drexel’s Earle Mack School of Law will receive accreditation by the American Bar Association, and the beginning of a great experiment in exporting the University’s brand to Sacramento. I look forward to continued growth and success in the future.”Greenberg, who succeeds Stephen W. Director, has an intimate knowledge of the institution on many levels, and through his development of innovative interdisciplinary programs has aided Drexel’s transformation. He has administered honors programs and the Pennoni Honors College for 13 years. He has lead the development and implementation of innovative interdisciplinary academic programs, including building the Honors community in quality and size, and introducing the Drexel Cultural Passport with which Drexel freshman receive one free admittance to Philadelphia’s cultural institutions. Greenberg has established a visiting scholars program and launched the University’s writing program. He also established the Center for Civic Engagement and Study Abroad program, while he provides academic oversight for the Drexel Co-op 101 course, an introduction to the Drexel co-op program, which alternates classroom study with professional experience. Together with University Relations, Greenberg oversees “The Drexel InterView” while providing editorial oversight of the online magazine The Smart Set from Drexel University (www.thesmartset.com). During his tenure at Drexel, Dr. Greenberg has also served as interim dean of the School of Education, supervisor of the Drexel-School District of Philadelphia Partnership, and as director of graduate studies in the English Department. Prior to joining Drexel, he taught at The University of Michigan and Saginaw Valley University. He was also a visiting professor at Swarthmore College and a National Endowment for the Humanities Post-Doctoral Fellow at Princeton University. His teaching at Drexel has been recognized with the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching.Greenberg has served on numerous boards. He has chaired the executive committee of the Modern Language Association's Division of Literature and Science, and is a founder and past president of the Society for Literature, Science, and the Arts. For years he was review editor of Brown University’s Modern Language Studies and serves on a number of editorial and executive boards, including those for Johns Hopkins University Press, The University of Michigan Press, Longman’s Publishers, McGraw-Hill, and the Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics. He has evaluated grants and educational programs for the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Science Foundation and consulted for the National Film Board of Canada and for the president and provost of The New School.Greenberg earned his bachelor’s degree from Queens College of the City University of New York and master’s and doctoral degrees in English Language and Literature from The University of Michigan. He has published three books and more than 30 articles or chapters in books and delivered more than 80 invited presentations and keynote addresses on 18th and 19th century British literature.
