Explosive Growth of Online Learning: Mayor-elect Nutter to Participate in Drexel Celebration
What: Drexel University Online will celebrate the first National Distance Learning Week (NDLW), Nov. 12 to 16, with an awards ceremony that will feature Philadelphia Mayor-elect Michael Nutter.

Nutter’s keynote address will focus on online learning. Dr. Kenneth E. Hartman, chairman of this year’s NDLW committee and director of academic affairs for Drexel Online, will explain how and why online learning has grown so rapidly and what’s in store for it.

At the ceremony, Steven G. Hart, president of the United States Distance Learning Association’s chapter that serves Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, will receive an award for his contributions in promoting online learning. Nine Drexel faculty members will also receive awards for their work as outstanding online instructors.

Background: More than 2.5 million college are enrolled in online courses, and almost 1 million K-12 students take Web-based courses. Online learners enjoy 24-7 communication with professors and classmates, can earn degrees entirely online and benefit from the convenience of completing coursework anytime, anyplace.
