10 Things to Do Before You Graduate

June 15 is quickly approaching. Round out your college experience by trying some or all of the following suggestions from Drexel senior Stephanie Takach.
1. Take a professor out to lunch or grab a beer during happy hour. Odds are you’ve had a professor who’s gone a few steps above his or her teaching duties. Whether they granted you that much-needed extension, lent a hand in a personal matter or made customized office hours to meet your needs, now is a great time to say thank you. It’s also a great time to pick their brain about their research if you’re interested in pursuing a post-baccalaureate degree. 2. Take a random class or attend a guest lecture. Hopefully you’ve got those gen-ed requirements out of the way by senior year. Now it’s time to be spontaneous and take an elective that has nothing to do with your major. If you’re not sure what to take, reach out to a professional in your field and ask them what courses they wish they took in college. If you’re having trouble getting into a class, it might be work auditing a class for non-credit, an act that brings out the Steve Jobs in all of us. 3. Bleed blue and gold by participating in a campus tradition. Drexel’s Homecoming Week is just around the corner (January 23-29). If you can’t make it to the Homecoming Week events, be sure to participate in a campus tradition by stopping in the Main Building before exams and rubbing the toe of The Water Boy. 4. Take a campus tour. Prospective students can be found touring Drexel almost every day. Do you remember the fun facts you learned during your tour many years ago? Campus has changed dramatically since we’ve started so why not take a campus tour offered by the Admissions Office and learn some of the ins and outs of our University before you say goodbye. Another option: take a tour of Philadelphia, a city full of history and even ghost stories. 5. Mentor a Freshie. There’s a lot of things you can do to help our your fellow Dragons. Meet up with an underclassman and shed insights from your past co-op opportunities, lend them a textbook they’ll need or help them choose which professors to take. Ask yourself: What did I wish I knew when I was started my Drexel career? 6. Get student discounts. The Cultural Passport is one of those things Drexel gives you during your freshman year that you wish you used more. But there’s still time to take advantage of your student ID. Check out CampusPhilly’s Student Discount page for tons of discounts available with your valid Dragon Card. 7. Attend a sports game on campus. If you know the Drexel Fight Song by heart, you’ve probably been to a few basketball games during your time here. If not, grab a DAC PACK T-shirt and check out a game around campus. During Homecoming Week the Men’s Basketball team is playing host to arch-rival Delaware on January 28 at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Be there. 8. Take a road trip. Whether you’re participating in Alternative Spring Break or planning a road trip to see all the Diners, Drive-ins and Dives locations from here to Florida, get the travel bug out of your system before you kick start your career and need to worry about vacation hours. 9. Roll up your sleeves and volunteer. If the last time you volunteered was to fulfill your five hours of community service during University 101, it’s time to visit the Lindy Center for Civic Engagement’s website. They have a database of service opportunities to choose from. On top of the rewarding feeling you’ll get, these experiences might make great last additions to your resume. 10. Get off your futon and run a 5K. It’s not easy to be a senior with senior projects, job searches and coursework piled high. Hit up the DAC for a fitness assessment and attend an exercise course once a week to keep the gym top of mind. Two races that might be worth training for are the annual University City 5k Run on Saturday, May 5 and the annual Broad Street Run on Sunday, May 6.
