Varsity Eight Crew Honored with Chairmans Cup for Performance in Womens Henley Royal Regatta

The President of Drexel University will receive the first Chairman’s Excellence Trophy in Foreign Competition from representatives of Aberdeen Asset Management and the Dad Vail Regatta Organizing Committee. The trophy is being given for the first place finish of Drexel’s Women’s Varsity Eight boat in the Henley Women’s Regatta last June.
The prestigious, world famous regatta is held annually at Henley-on-Thames just west of London. There, the 2010 Drexel crew of nine women became the first Aberdeen Dad Vail boat to win the Sports Council Cup at Henley. The Elite Eight Championship avenged their third place finish in the Dad Vail in Philadelphia.
Drexel joins Yale, Brown and Radcliff as the only American teams to return stateside with the Council Cup in tow.
Making the presentation to Drexel President John A. Fry will be Gary Marshall, Chief Executive of Aberdeen Asset Management, Inc., and Jack Galloway, Chairman of the Dad Vail Regatta Organizing Committee joined by Jim Hanna, president of DVROC, organizers of the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta. Representatives of Drexel’s athletic department headed by Director of Athletics Dr. Eric Zillmer and members of the 2010 Women’s Varsity Eight Champions will also attend.
The presentation will be held on Tuesday, May 3, at 2 p.m. in Drexel’s Great Court, Main Building, 32nd and Chestnut Streets
The Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta, Presented by Coca-Cola® is the largest collegiate regatta in North America with over 100 colleges and universities from the United States and Canada participating. It has been held annually since 1953 in Philadelphia on the Schuylkill River, thousands of student athletes and spectators visit the City of during the weekend of the second Saturday in May.
