ELAMĀ® Announces Graduation of 2010-2011 Class

April 20, 2011

The Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine® (ELAM) Program for Women at Drexel University College of Medicine is pleased to announce the graduation of its 16th class. The graduating class of 54 fellows joins a diverse community of nearly 700 alumnae leaders that represent almost 169 medical, dental, and public health schools from across the United States and Canada.

ELAM, established in 1995, is the only in-depth national program dedicated to preparing senior women faculty at schools of medicine, dentistry, and public health to move into positions of institutional leadership. The intensive fellowship encompasses executive education, personal leadership assessments and coaching, and networking and mentoring activities aimed at broadening perspectives, building new capacities, and encouraging professional connections. Program assignments, both group and individual, provide opportunities for applying what has been learned and exercising leadership in a variety of situations and settings.

The year-long fellowship concluded in April with the presentation of the fellows' Institutional Action Projects. These projects, which were developed in collaboration with the fellows' dean or other senior official, were conducted at their home institutions and designed to address an institutional or departmental need or priority. The projects were presented during ELAM's annual Forum on Emerging Issues.

"The 2010-2011 class was exceptional," acknowledges Diane Magrane, MD, director of Drexel University College of Medicine's International Center for Executive Leadership in Academics, which hosts the ELAM program. "The high quality of the Institutional Action Projects these fellows conducted demonstrates the knowledge gained of the depth and breadth of the challenges facing academic health centers, and the skills that a leader must possess to meet these challenges."

ELAM's mission is to increase the number of women in senior academic leadership positions. From there, these new appointments would help change the culture of academic health organizations in becoming more accepting of different perspectives and more responsive to societal needs and expectations. ELAM graduates now number close to 700 and serve in numerous leadership positions at the majority of US and Canadian academic health centers, including:

  • Five of the 17 current women deans at U.S. medical schools
  • Six of the 13 women deans at U.S. dental schools
  • Two of 14 women deans at U.S. public health schools

About ELAM

ELAM is a core program of the Institute for Women's Health and Leadership at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pa. The Institute continues the legacy of advancing women in medicine that began in 1850 with the founding of the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, the nation's first women's medical school and a predecessor of today's Drexel University College of Medicine.
