Dr. Varghese has been involved in numerous research projects. At Temple University Hospital, she studied the epidemiology of suicide and depression in the elderly.

At the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Varghese was involved in the following studies:

  1. A six-week, double-blind, multicenter, placebo-controlled study evaluating the efficacy and safety of flexible doses of oral ziprasidone as add-on, adjunctive therapy with lithium, valproate or lamotrigine in bipolar 1 depression
  2. Neuronal signaling of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (B DNF), a neuropeptide, as an efficacy biomarker for antidepressant responsiveness in major depression
  3. Transcranial magnetic stimulation laboratory for treatment-resistant depression
  4. Transcranial magnetic stimulation during pregnancy
  5. Vagal nerve stimulation for treatment-resistant depression
  6. Failure to thrive - prospective cohort study on children who had failure to thrive as infants/toddlers
