Education

Jeffrey Barsuk, MD, MS, SFHM, graduated AOA from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and completed a residency in internal medicine at the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He was one of the first three hospitalists at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and helped shape the program’s development into one of the largest in the nation. In 2010, he completed a master of science degree in clinical investigation. He recently completed a certificate program in healthcare quality and patient safety. As a hospitalist, he is involved in several quality improvement projects and safety committees at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He was named a top ten hospitalist in 2011 by the American College of Physicians.

Jeffrey H. Barsuk, MD, MS, SFHM, is an associate professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Dr. Barsuk currently serves as the director of simulation and patient safety for graduate medical education at the Feinberg School of Medicine. He is recognized nationally as a medical educator. He has been given national awards for medical education from the Society of Hospital Medicine, Association of American Medical Colleges and the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. Dr. Barsuk served on the Society of Hospital Medicine’s education committee and has written curricula for procedure training for physicians nationally. He has lectured internationally on the use of simulation-based medical education to improve patient safety.

Research

As key clinical faculty in the internal medicine residency program, Dr. Barsuk focused the last eight years of his research on optimizing physicians’ procedure performance using simulation technology. These efforts have been based on the mastery learning theoretical framework, and his research team uses rigorous, validated standards for physician training. His team has published over 30 articles on this topic and demonstrated how this approach to procedure training improves patient care and outcomes.
