Resident and Fellow Wellness

Drexel's Graduate Medical Education department strongly supports resident and fellow wellness. Our goals are to promote a healthy work-life balance, encourage peer support within programs, and provide a safe and anonymous forum to express concerns and issues. We hope to continue to raise awareness about the importance of physical, professional, and psychological wellness throughout our residents' and fellows' education.

Drexel's Wellness Committee is an inter-department collaboration between residents, faculty members and administration with the goal of providing resources to help our housestaff cope with the challenges of residency. These challenges include physician burnout, job stress, interpersonal relationship issues, adverse events, and mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, managing sleep disturbances, and substance abuse. Mentorship is provided in all programs for trainees to help with professional and personal growth.

We have resources that include:

Staff can help to assess the problem and to provide helpful information and direct interventions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The staff that works on this line has direct access to 24 hour crisis response centers, home visiting assessment teams, crisis specialists, and critical information regarding how to utilize the services of the behavioral health system including help in getting treatment for unwilling persons who are dangerous to themselves or others.

AAHS Employee Assistance Program

The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) with LifeWorks (www.lifeworks.com) offers confidential counseling service and provides screening and referrals to local providers, at any time, day or night. The EAP can help you and your household members identify and find resources to solve personal problems, such as:

  • Legal questions or concerns
  • Marital or family conflicts
  • Childcare or senior care concerns
  • Financial problems
  • Alcohol or drug issues
  • Stress, depression and other emotional problems

Whether life's challenges are big or small, your EAP is available to help you and your family find a solution and restore your peace of mind. The program is available whenever you need it – at no cost to you. An advocate is ready to help assess your needs and develop a solution to help resolve your concerns. He or she can also direct you to an array of resources in your community and online tools.
