Title: Matroids over rings
Abstract: Matroids are widely used objects in combinatorics, arising most anywhere linear algebra and combinatorics meet. However, in some applications it is useful to have an object retaining more information than matroids do. In this talk I will discuss two examples producing these enriched objects, one in toric geometry and one in tropical geometry, which can be unified by introducing a notion of matroid over any commutative ring.
