Drexel Materials Alum Frederick Schmidt, Jr. Wins Alumni Service to Profession Award

Frederick Schmidt Jr., BS Metallurgical Engineering ’68, MS Materials Engineering ’70, PhD ’95, is the recipient of Drexel University’s 2018 Service to the Profession Alumni Award.
In 2015, Schmidt retired after 17 years as senior managing consultant at Engineering Systems Inc. Prior to Engineering Systems, he held a number of positions in the field of materials science and engineering, including that of chief metallurgist for Remington Arms. Schmidt was commissioned in the U.S. Army in 1968 and served for 12 years in various command positions, until retiring as Captain in the Corps of Engineers in 1980. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Materials International, and Alpha Sigma Mu, the professional honor society for materials science and engineering, where he currently serves as president and chairman of the Board of Trustees. He holds a Professional Engineer license in eight states and has earned the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying designation as a Model Law Engineer.
