Ph.D. student Guannan ChenPh.D. student Guannan Chen (advisor: Jonathan Spanier) has been selected as a 2012 Lee Smith Fellow.
Guannan will give the talk "Direct Measurement of Band Edge Discontinuity in a Single Core-shell Nanowire by Photocurrent Spectroscopy” at the International Conference of Young Researchers on Advanced Materials (ICYRAM) in Singapore July 1-6, 2012. The conference is organized by International Union of Materials Research Societies. According to the conference website, “the mission of ICYRAM is to provide a platform for researchers under the age of 40 to present technical findings of their research, to network within the international community of other young researchers, and to increase the breadth of their general materials-based knowledge.” Guannan additionally visited his group’s collaborator, Prof Li Lu's group at the National University of Singapore (NUS). The Lee Smith Fellowship provides funding for a Drexel graduate student, typically from the College of Engineering, to travel to Asia to present at a conference, or visit a university or a company. The award provides reimbursement for travel and up to $2,500 towards expenses. The Lee Smith Award is named in honor of J. K. Lee Smith who was, until his retirement, Vice President for Government Relations at Drexel. He was instrumental in starting the Asian Studies Foundation that sponsored a large number of graduate students, mostly from China, to study at Drexel. After his death, the Asian Studies Foundation and a number of the students who were supported by the Foundation contributed the money to endow the Traveling Fellow Award.
