For six years, he served as Department Head of MSE. He holds a PhD in mechanical engineering from MIT, an MS in civil engineering and engineering mechanics from Columbia University, and a diploma in mechanical engineering from the National Technical University of Athens in Greece. His research interests include mechanical properties of materials, constitutive modeling of coupled phenomena in processing of materials, finite element analysis, particulate processing with an emphasis on pharmaceuticals and powder metallurgy, and characterization with x-ray microtomography. Zavaliangos has been a visiting scientist at several pharmaceutical companies including Amgen, Merck, and Johnson & Johnson. In addition to funding from private industry, he has been funded by NSF, ARL/ARO, and the Department of Education and has directed or co-directed five Department of Education GAANN grants. Zavaliangos has an extensive record in service, including Drexel University’s Faculty Senate (Budget, Planning & Development Committee Chair), University Executive Planning Committee, RCM Working Group, and the College of Engineering Strategic Planning Executive Committee, in addition to other positions. He was a Provost Fellow in the Office of Planning and Institutional Research. Zavaliangos is a recipient of an NSF CAREER Award and a 2021 College of Engineering Outstanding Service Award, among other accolades.
