Get Involved

Students interested in making a difference in community life through collective, public problem-solving can find multiple learning, engagement, reflection, and leadership opportunities at the Lindy Center for Civic Engagement. Our high-quality and meaningful offerings, as well as our partnerships both on- and off-campus, engage students in collective processes of identifying, understanding, and addressing issues of public concern locally and globally. Check out the subpages in this section (using the left-hand navigation menu) to explore our flagship programs and events, and read below for a menu of everything available through our office and partner offices.

LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

Education is key to civic responsibility, providing citizens with a deeper understanding of and context for social issues that they seek to change. Learning opportunities we offer include:

VOLUNTEERISM AND SERVICE

We offer multiple ways for students to volunteer in the local community, from one-time opportunities for individuals and groups to sustained commitments.

  • Find and sign up for volunteer opportunities on your own in the Galaxy Civic Engagement Database, which includes listings for individuals and groups. We also occasionally share volunteer opportunities with trusted partners in our newsletter and on social media.
  • Make a sustained commitment to service through the Drexel Community Collaborators program
  • Learn more about clearances for volunteering with minors and get assistance with other logistics, such as SEPTA passes. To learn more about ways we can support individuals and groups with their own volunteer efforts, visit our Student-Led Initiatives page.

POLITICAL ENGAGEMENT

Making your voice heard to local and national officials, in the US or wherever you call home, is an important tool of civic engagement. Here are some resources for voting and other political activism and organizing:

  • Drexel Votes is a coalition of offices and campus representatives who provide voter education and resources to the Drexel community. Visit their page to learn about voter registration, important dates, and links to places on- and off-campus where you can learn more about political engagement. You can also follow the Drexel Votes Instagram page, which is run by students in the Civic Influencer program.
  • The Drexel University Libraries maintains a comprehensive voting guide with information about upcoming elections and links to voter engagement resources.
  • For International students, a great way to build collective understanding and power in your home countries while you’re at Drexel is to join identity-based student and community organizations. For student organizations, check out Dragon Link. For Philadelphia community organizations, this Global Directory through Global Philadelphia can help you find a relevant groups, local businesses, and more.

LEADERSHIP

Students who want to deepen their civic engagement skills and lead their peers in this work can find multiple leadership opportunities at the Lindy Center for Civic Engagement. Not only are these programs a great way for students to develop their own practice and knowledge, they also help students build community and collective capacity with like-minded peers.

  • The Civic Engagement Leadership Certificate engages students in a year of workshops, reflection meetings, leadership positions, and a collaborative 6-month project.
  • Serving as a course assistant for CIVC 101 and/or a Community-Based Learning Course is an opportunity to work closely with engaged faculty and staff and guide students through academic civic engagement experiences.
  • Apply to be a student worker at the Lindy Center to learn more about what we do and how our office runs while serving as an ambassador for our programs.
  • Take advantage of our Anti-Racism mini-grant which provides funding to students doing civic engagement projects through an anti-racist lens.

COMMUNITY AND SUPPORT

In addition to the opportunities above, we host events and programs to bring people together around a shared interest in civic engagement and social justice. We also love working with student organizations and our fellow campus offices on their civic engagement and social-justice related programming—from helping you find group volunteer opportunities to co-designing and co-facilitating workshops.

  • Our event calendar includes recurring Lindy Center events where you can gather with like-minded Dragons and other community members—examples include First Friday and Talking Tuesday.
  • We coordinate a Civic Engagement LLC for incoming students interested in developing their civic identity within and beyond Drexel right away.
  • Student organizations, individual students, and campus offices can request Lindy Center support for their civic engagement efforts (for instance, planning a group volunteer activity or doing an academic project related to civic engagement). View our Student-Led Initiatives page for more information or contact lindycenter@drexel.edu to tell us about your ideas and work.
