Old Pine Community Center - Saturdays for Seniors

Ambuj Suri

Hello everyone!!

Welcome to Saturday for Seniors :) My name is Ambuj Suri and I am Drexel Community Scholar in my third year studying Business Administration. I transferred to Drexel during my Freshman year. Shortly thereafter, I discovered the Lindy Institute for Civic Engagement through the National Service Immersion and have been involved ever since!

Saturday for Seniors is a program established at the Old Pine Community Center on 4th and Lombard – a quick train ride away in South Philadelphia. Saturday for Seniors is an open brunch hosted by members of the church and community center for about 50 to 60 seniors in hopes that they are not left hungry or neglected over the weekend. The idea came from a couple who was affiliated with the Old Pine Church and saw that senior citizens in the Philadelphia area did not have many places to go or any access to hot meals on Saturday and Sunday since most senior centers usually closed for the weekend. For many of them, it has become a place they are able to come, socialize, and stay active at an older age – which you’ll find is very hard to do as a demographic that is usually overlooked by an ever-changing society.

Our jobs as volunteers include preparing and serving meals as well as a bagged lunch for the seniors to take home with them. Not to mention, it is extremely important for the volunteers to also socialize with the seniors and provide them with a new face to interact with. You’ll find that the seniors who come to SFS are extremely grateful for the things you do for them. I have had a great experience with the site and hope you do too!

If you would like to know more about this site and how to get involved, email me at so we can start a conversation! I’m looking forward to going upstream with you to solve issues of poverty around the Philadelphia region!!

Have a great day!!
