  • Apply for Kline Spring Break in France: European Union Law

    Deadline: November 15

Learn more about the Kline in France study abroad program!

The Spring Break Course in Rennes, France will have three components: (1) readings and a lecture on legal principles applicable in civil law countries; (2) lectures on the growth of European private law, French criminal law, and British common law; (3) a final paper in which students will analyze an aspect of U.S. law taking a comparative approach to French or European law. This one-credit course will introduce Kline law students to civil law, which is the legal system of most of the world, and to the growing influence of E.U. law. By studying aspects of other legal traditions, Kline law students will develop a more nuanced and critical approach to the U.S. common law system.

Rennes is the capital of the Brittany region in Northwest France. Rennes is a dynamic city where researchers, faculty and students make up about one third of the population. Majestic 18th century buildings overlook spacious public squares, and La Vilaine River runs across the city, which is a two-hour trip from Paris and one hour from historic destinations such as Mont Saint-Michel and Saint-Malo.

    Dear Students,

Welcome back! I hope you all had a wonderful summer. As you begin the Fall Semester, keep in mind that it is time to start working towards satisfying the 50-hour Pro Bono Service Requirement (All JD students). You can begin doing pro bono work once you have completed one semester of law school. Please be mindful when planning your pro bono service for the year that most projects are not structured for students to earn 50 hours in one semester. Due to the current pandemic some projects will be offered only as remote opportunities while others will be in-person.

Please check your email for an updated list of the Pro Bono Opportunities that are available for you to enroll in this semester. Training for these projects will take place during the first few weeks of the Fall Semester. If you are interested in participating in any of these projects, please be sure to submit your resume (some projects require a statement of interest and/or interview) and rank your choices in order of preference no later than the registration deadline of Wednesday, August 24 at 12:00pm. Please be sure to list more than one choice as space is limited in all projects. Listing only one opportunity does not increase your chances of being placed in that project.

If you have questions about any of the projects, or the Pro Bono Requirement, in general, please be in touch. I’m excited to work with each of you to find a rewarding and meaningful pro bono experience!

    Best,

    Rashida T. West, Esq.
Director, Pro Bono & Public Interest Programs
